Geomechanics and underground works

RMR, Q and GSI characterization, 3D geomechanical models, pit slope, tunnel and ground support design at every project stage.

Our team assesses foundations, pit slopes and underground works at conceptual, pre-feasibility, feasibility, detailed design, construction, operation and closure stages.

Service scope

Surface geomechanics

  • Supervision and logging of vertical and oriented diamond drilling, at surface and underground.
  • Core orientation using ACT II/III, Devicore and optical and acoustic televiewer methods.
  • In-situ permeability testing, and installation and monitoring of Casagrande and vibrating wire piezometers.
  • Geological-geomechanical and structural mapping, and geological fault inventory.
  • Detail lines and geomechanical stations with RMR76 and RMR89 classification, Barton's Q index and GSI estimation.
  • In-situ tests on outcrops and core (Schmidt hammer and tilt test) and on residual soils and quaternary deposits (pocket penetrometer and vane).
  • Planning of rock and soil mechanics laboratory testing at certified institutions.

3D geomechanical modeling

  • Block models of geomechanical properties (RMR, GSI, RQD, Barton's Q and strength).
  • Interpretation of 3D lithological, alteration and structural geological models for geomechanical assessments.
  • Application of model results to pit excavability and blasting.

Underground design and stability

  • Rock mass geotechnical model built from geological, structural and hydrogeological models.
  • Geomechanical characterization and zoning with RMR89, RMR76, Q, GSI and MRMR systems.
  • 2D limit equilibrium and 2D/3D finite element stability analyses.
  • Geomechanical tunnel design and ground support specifications.
  • Geomechanical models under high-stress conditions in deep underground workings.
  • Geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring.
  • Trade-off, pre-feasibility, feasibility, basic and detailed engineering studies.
